This film tells the story of a B-17 bomber on its final mission over Germany. The silent sky and the noise of the plane’s engine builds tension as the bomber and its crew drones toward the target. The sky begins to threaten. Flak bursts puff ominously. German interceptors fill the sky. (One of William Wyler’s cameramen was killed on the mission.) Historians point t this film as a prologue to Wyler’s later The Best Years of Our Lives.
