Description

The men and fighter planes of the 57th fighter group are studied by William Wyler’s camera. This group was assigned the task of destroying German supply lines in Italy. Through Wyler’s film we see the beginning of a new kind of war. The planes drop from the sky to destroy the faceless targets far beneath. As Wyler describes: “The airman never sees the face of the people, but only the face of the country.”
