Description

This live-action exploration of the “People of the Potlach” shows the continuity of the culture of Native Americans who lived and still live along the Pacific Ocean from Oregon to the Alaska panhandle. The history of the first migrations to North and South America and how the inhabitants of the various regions developed unique characteristics is revealed. The northwest region is a land of abundant food resources such as seafood and wild plants which minimized the necessity for farming, of cedar forests which provided clothing as well as utensils, canoes, and buildings, and of complex cultural and artistic expressions such as the potlach and totem poles. How these elements where made and used in historic times is demonstrated by contemporary members of various tribes who have kept the traditions alive.
